[TNG] New Ground

[TNG] Season 5, Episode 10: New Ground

Rating: 2

This episode is fairly well executed. Troi gets to be a proper counselor, which is nice. The sci-fi B-plot is a little dull but has an appropriate day-in-the-life quality before some needlessly high stakes are introduced near the end. The main story about Worf having to come to terms with the reality of Alexander being around is fine, it’s just not quite a story we could ever care too much about. It doesn’t help that Alexander is such a lame kid, but overall it feels like something is missing from this set up. Klingon culture doesn’t seem to be a part of this story as much as it should – there’s some talk that Klingon kids are different from human ones, and need to be raised in different ways, but it would’ve been nice if that was actually evident in the story.

Notes:

This isn’t a good sign.
Worf’s mom tries to tell him he’s a bad dad in as polite a way as possible.
There’s also a guy that thinks it would be cool if space ships could surf.
Alexander doesn’t have any friends except this tree branch/sock puppet thing.
Alexander was caught stealing a model of a lizard, but I think Worf understands because its a pretty cool model.
They test the cool surfing thing
The test ship blows up, what a grom. that’s a surfing term, y’all.
Action!
Adventure!
Everything catches on fire and Worf has to save him.
But then Alexander coughs right in Worf’s face, Worf later dies of Kid Flu.
Don’t worry, Riker (reluctantly) saved the branch.
Then Worf puts his hand on Alexander’s shoulder.
