[DS9] The Begotten

[DS9] Season 5, Episode 12: The Begotten

Rating: 2

Odo reconciling with the father figure he resents is all extremely by-the-books. Kira finally gives birth to the O’Brien baby. There’s a nice moment at the end where Kira and Odo meet up to talk about their storylines, and I couldn’t help but think maybe if the stories had been a little more intertwined some more resonance could’ve been pulled from Odo’s story. Also, I don’t need Star Trek to be hard sci-fi at all, but the way they reinstate his Odo powers seems like pure magic. I guess they were sick of Odo being a regular ol humanoid.

Notes:

They find what is either a glass of shampoo or a baby changeling.
Odo decided talking to a cup of goop alone in the lab wasn’t embarrassing enough, so he goes to the promenade and puts it in a mug, just daring someone to ask him what he’s doing.
He vows to teach the changeling with kindness, not like how his jerk dad raised him.
Dad issues ensue. I get that the dad is kinda rude, but Odo whining about being treated like an “unknown substance,” in a lab isn’t the most sympathetic. You kind of were just some slime in a jar, dude. Give him a break.
Odo says a pyramid is “one of the most mysterious shapes in nature.” Yeah no one can quite figure it out
This is the subplot, whatever is happening here.
Turns out a combo of Odo’s friendlier approach and his dad’s more aggressive one is solution to the problem. Who would have thought!!
O’Brien and Kira’s boyfriend stop bickering with each other long enough for her to very easily give birth.
The goop won’t grow. It is broken goop.
But then it absorbs into Odo…
Which makes it so Odo is a changeling again. Um…what
Odo isn’t mad at his dad anymore, he promises to write.
