[DS9] The Darkness and the Light

[DS9] Season 5, Episode 11: The Darkness and the Light

Rating: 3

A lot of the episode is working through very familiar murder mystery procedural beats. What elevates this episode is that rather than going through a lineup of suspects until one of them ends up being the culprit, it’s not an existing character that is behind the killings. So a lot basically rests on the very end, where the murderer is a little weirder and more interesting than we’ve come to expect from a Trek episode like this. The other strength is that even though the killer has understandable motives, Kira doesn’t really seem to feel any guilt over her “sins.” It suits her character, and it also gives the viewer a little space to think about the moral issues at play.

Lupaza and Furel are killed so Kira just starts punching people.

It’s like a Cardassian two-face.

When backup arrives they ask her what went down. Kira: “He wanted to protect the innocent and separate the darkness from the light. But he didn’t realize, the light only shines in the dark, and sometimes innocence is just an excuse for the guilty” everyone else: “oh uh, hm. Ok. I guess maybe we had to be there?”
