[TNG] Lower Decks

[TNG] Season 7, Episode 15: Lower Decks

Rating: 4

I kinda wish a “Lower Decks” episode had been a recurring tradition, even if it wasn’t these same characters, because it does a lot of things I love and want more of in Star Trek. The run time is balanced more towards character than the espionage plot, which, combined with the focus on lower ranking officers, makes the Enterprise feel a little more like a real place. That would be fine in itself, but the episode also develops these new characters and their relationships very well during the runtime, so the stakes of what happens to them actually feel important.

Notes:

This is Taurik. Why isn’t Vorik Taurik? Hard to say.
And you might remember Sito from The First Duty!
Picard remembers her 😬
The senior staff gathers to discuss a situation, but we’re just left out here with these two. We’re out of the loop!
It’s cool to see the main characters from a different perspective.
Picard really lays into Sito. Good thing she’ll be around for awhile, he might feel guilty about this otherwise.
And Worf beats her up when she’s blindfolded.
But then we learn that everyone is mean to her because they really like her but sometimes its hard to express yourself when you’re trying to be a cool starfleet officer. We also learn Worf straight makes up Klingon rituals/practices. Honestly this is a huge revelation. Do Klingons even scream at the sky when someone dies? Impossible to know for sure now.
Ogawa also gets some spotlight!
Sito is chosen for a secret mission!
But she doesn’t make it 😢
Then Worf sits in a chair.
