[TNG] Sub Rosa

[TNG] Season 7, Episode 14: Sub Rosa

Rating: 1

The notorious Sub Rosa was kinda fun on rewatch, to be honest. I’m way more up for an incredibly stupid take on gothic romance now than I was growing up I guess. But…. it’s still incredibly stupid. And of course, if you were worried that it didn’t involve a family member of the crew, ease your mind with the knowledge that Beverly’s grandma turns up. Just sit back, light a candle, and relax while you take in the majesty of Sub Rosa.

Notes:

Hey remember when there was that colony of Irish stereotypes back in season two? They thought it would be a good idea to do that again, but Scottish.
Some guy breaks into Beverly’s grandma’s house just to blow out a candle because it was a haunted candle. Don’t know why Beverly is being so uptight about this.
A ghost woos Beverly by giving her flowers, and suddenly appearing behind her in a mirror and then vanishing. That’s what I’ve been doing wrong!
There’s a storm so Enterprise shoots it.
Really rolling with the season two vibes.
This ghost is so good at making sweet love that Beverly goes insane when he is not around.
She even resigns, just to be with him. You may think she’s under some kind of spell, or mind-control, but nothing like that is ever revealed. She really does just have the hots for this ghost.
Braga: “When I was writing the words, ‘She writhes around in the bed having invisible sex,’ I just thought, ‘Oh man, we’re asking for trouble. Are they gonna be able to pull this off?'”
No, Brannon. You didn’t pull it off.
You know what? I’m in now. Lightning grandma won me over.
Because Beverly discovers that he really wasn’t a ghost, but an alien, she kills him. In order to survive, he needed her family line’s biochemistry which is compatible with his energy matrix (AKA her family has an ancient, sexy haunted candle)
