[TNG] Preemptive Strike

[TNG] Season 7, Episode 24: Preemptive Strike

Rating: 3

We love Ro, and we’re glad she came back for one last episode. It’s too bad there was never a follow up in any of the shows, ’cause this isn’t the most conclusive send off for a character, but that’s also a bit of a strength I think. “Preemptive Strike” is of a piece with other season seven episodes where TNG is interacting with the troubling treaty between the Federation and Cardassia that shows us a morally compromised side to characters – particularly Picard – that doesn’t feel quite right to me. I understand that’s the intention, but that ambiguity doesn’t play as naturally in TNG as it does with DS9, especially when it’s introduced so late in the run of the show.

Notes:

Ro is back! luckily Picard rescues her from having to talk with people.
The Maquis are attacking Cardassians and Enterprise has to step in.
Gul Evek is mad
Ro is assigned to go undercover with the Maquis which will be a great opportunity for her to prove that Picard has always been right to trust her, and that she’s super loyal to the Federation.
Data and Worf play the role of starfleet dorks in order to make Ro look cooler. They nail it.
Ro hides by kissing strangers.
Ro is able to steal supplies from Enterprise to prove herself to the Maquis (by secretly asking Enterprise nicely)
But Cardassians are mean.
They kill an old man that was nice to Ro and liked sandwiches!
most of being undercover is kissing i guess
But then Ro points a phaser at Riker!
But it makes her sad.
…and it makes Picard grimace-ey.
