[TNG] Season 5, Episode 24: The Next Phase

The Next Phase could have been a very by-the-books TNG procedural episode, slightly elevated by the fun team up of Ro and Geordi, but the Romulan intrigue invigorates the plot really well. It’s also nice that Ro thinking they’re dead is handled sparingly and convincingly.

Notes:

Riker takes a crew to help a very vapor wave Romulan ship.

But something goes wrong with the transport and Ro and Geordi will never return.

Ro wakes up and no one is paying attention to her. Ro still can’t get any respect around here!

Ro and Geordi meet up and do their secret handshake.

Ro thinks they’re dead and now they’re spooky ghosts. Geordi says lol nah thats not it.

It’s funny that Geordi’s proof that they’re not ghosts is that he’s still blind and still has clothes on. Maybe ghost lore has changed in the future. ALL GHOSTS ARE NUDE IN THE FUTURE

So they take the opportunity to listen in on some juicy Romulan gossip.

But one of them has the strange non-nude ghost condition Ro and Geordi do!

Geordi tries to talk to Data a lot

They push the Romulan out into space!!

I like how this episode builds up to the funeral/party for Geordi and Ro.

But then Geordi and Ro *kind of* show up

Which is cool but also ruined everyone’s good time.
