Alternate Voyager – Season One Overview

AlternateVoyager_S1P1

Our first entry in Alternate Voyager: Season One focuses exclusively on what our version of the premiere, Caretaker, would be like. As we’ve mentioned before, we like the first episode of Voyager a lot, and a lot has remained the same, at least compared to what we have in store for the rest of the season. Future installments also won’t be as detailed, and will include 2-4 episodes worth of story.

Alternate Voyager – The Bridge

This week in Alternate Voyager, we continue to breakdown what our version of the crew would be like. This entry focuses on the bridge crew. A major element of Alternate Voyager is how divided the Maquis and Federation officers are when the series begins. The bridge is mostly held by the Federation, and the attitudes and characterization of it’s members have a lot to do with the tenuous situation they’re forced into. Another notable difference is that the bridge crew basically serves only on the bridge. They don’t use shuttle pods or go on away missions unless there’s a special reason. They make the big decisions and manage the daily running of the ship. The exception is Tuvok and Ayala, whose responsibilities include commanding away missions.

Alternate Voyager: Engineering

Before we get to the actual stories in our Alternate Voyager, we need to introduce the crew. One of the things we like about the original Voyager was that they kept a pretty consistent group of extras throughout the show, so it felt like there was a finite, real crew. In our Alternate Voyager we’re going to push that even further and do something the shows were never able to do, which is expand the “Lower Deck” crewmen into having a more substantial supporting role. First we tackle our version of the Engineering crew, which is much different than their original counterparts. The central idea for our Engineering is that they are comprised mostly of Maquis, which was part of the agreement when Janeway and Chakotay were dividing up roles on the ship. The Engineering team is a tight knit, rowdy, and familial group.

Alternate Voyager: The Kazon

“Alternate Voyager” is an ongoing series where we spin some of the great premises of Voyager into our own alternate fan fiction. This week, we tackle our version of the Kazon.
The best recurring aliens in Star Trek have a strong core concept that presents a philosophy or disposition that is both clear and different from human values but has room for nuance. This goes for allies and adversaries. They have to be a species viewers want to learn more about, not simply weird looking people that fly around in cool ships acting as plot obstructions.
Though a mildly interesting tribal system developed as the Kazon were explored in Voyager, they were never defined very well, so in Alternate Voyager we’re going to drastically change them. A lot of their new characteristics will echo original premises, and they’ll also play an important role in our alternate first season of Voyager.
