[VOY] Phage

VOY Season 1, Episode 5 (Netflix S1 E4): Phage

Rating: 2

The premise of this episode is a bit goofy (aliens steal Neelix’s lungs), but it earns points back for introducing the Vidiians, who have a lot of interesting components to them. The story spends a lot of time featuring the relationship between Kes and Neelix, which is painful to watch. Overall the episode gets a 2, but should probably be watched to understand the Vidiians.

Somewhat similar to TOS episode “Spock’s Brain”
Notes:

At the beginning of the show Janeway tells us there has been a power shortage. This is an appropriate theme if they would actually take it seriously. We don’t see the effects of the power shortage, we just have to take Janeway’s word for it that it’s a big problem. It ends up just being an excuse to run into the Vidiians, which is ok I guess.

Neelix is re-routing power conduits? He’s taken to Federation technology very quickly for someone who didn’t know what a transporter was three episodes ago. Also, what a ridiculous looking outfit.

A cave! Nothing could go wrong in there!

File under: Cave!

They beamed the lungs directly out of his body??

When The Doctor gets stressed his bubble machine calms him down

The explanation of the holo-lungs is kind of interesting

Neelix complains about having to stare at the ugly ceiling for the rest of his life, but look what the ceiling has to stare at

The writers were excited to develop the Kes/Neelix relationship, but it doesn’t work. They have no chemistry. It’s weird and gross.

Like in the first episode, Tuvok portrays genuine friendship despite showing no emotion. He’s a great Vulcan.

I like some of the concepts for the Vidiians, like having an advance species that is fighting a catastrophic disease and must go to desperate measures to survive.

File under: Vidiians

40:55 Man! Tuvok has a fast draw!

In the conclusion of the episode they reveal that Kes will start working with The Doctor. So after only several episodes of Paris learning to be an aid to The Doctor they drop him and Kes takes his place

I have to disagree with your rating. I haven’t seen this one in a while but it does stand out as one of the classics. Surely the Vidiians are one of the most interesting species Voyager comes across, it definitely deserves more points for that alone.

I agree with you about the Vidiians, and you may be right about the episode. I’ll have to think it over. I just had problems with most of the things that happen aside from the development of the Vidiians (like the Kes/Neelix relationship), which took up most of the episode.

Yeah. I feel like skipping this one would break up knowledge of the Vidiians but gods. The constant Neelix is maddening.
