[TNG] Masks

[TNG] Season 7, Episode 17: Masks

Rating: 1

Y’know… a lot of this episode is promising. An ancient civilization reforming the enterprise into a shadow of itself could be something. The million year old structure being revealed inside the comet was cool. And I like some of the detective work on figuring out the mythology, even if its both not specific enough and too in-the-woods. But the real pain points come down to Brent Spiner’s excruciating over acting and the resolution essentially being Picard pointing out that it sure is exhausting for the sun and moon to be chasing each other – so then possessed Data just goes to sleep.

Notes:

Look how clean she keeps the table while working with clay.
Deanna wants this kid to think about his feelings when he’s sculpting but he just wants to make a cool bird. It’s unclear if Deanna is teaching a class for some reason or she just likes bothering people while they sculpt.
But then strange artifacts start showing up, accompanied by woodwind music.
Data gets in trouble for downloading mahjong on the computers.
Uhoh the chains are off Brent Spiner
So he’s immediately on the furniture you can’t STOP this guy when he becomes an Actor.
Data gets a pretzel stuck to his uniform and has a meltdown.
More of the ship succumbs to the woodwind music.
They goof around talking in riddles for a while. Lots of proper nouns.
But then the masks come on, and things get super serious.
They have such a great time that Data needs a nap, which also solves everything.
