[VOY] Season 4, Episode 18: The Killing Game
This is probably the best use of the Hirogen, but they still aren’t very interesting villains, they just happen to fit into a fun idea. That fun idea probably could have been really cool if a bigger budget allowed for crazier and crazier holo-shenanigans, but the whole story mostly playing out in Nazi occupied France is still fun enough for this episode to earn a 3. Plus the episode chugs along at a pretty good pace, even if the plotting is pretty straight forward.

Klingon Janeway is dead??
The Hirogen have taken over Voyager and are going through simulations from Voyager’s database, using the crew as prey.
The crew has things on their necks that make them think they’re holodeck characters, but they still kinda seem to act similar to themselves.
The current simulation they’re running is the Nazis vs the French Resistance.
B’Elanna lets a Nazi touch her shoulder so she can get intel.
Seven was kinda killed!
The Doctor and Harry are on the outside, scheming to take back the ship.
They figure out a way to have Seven go back into the holodeck, but not be under the mind control.
I guess this guy is about as nuanced as the Hirogen get, because unlike the younger Hirogen that just want to kill prey, this guy wants to learn a few things from the prey before killing them.
Secret French Resistance mission!
A device that will disable Janeway’s mind control is on the holodeck for some reason. Nevermind that – –
– – Explosion!
The explosion breaks a hole in the holodeck? American troops are sneaking onto the ship! How does the holodeck work again? Are there any rules for this thing anymore? Stay tuned to find out the excuses!
