There is some good stuff in this episode but the guest star character is outrageously annoying.

Tam and Data beam aboard the alien, and it’s also a ship. It’s lonely because it’s crew died a long time ago. I liked this idea, I wish it had been used in a more interesting way.

    I
agree, Harry Groener plays a very irritating character – and Tin Man does look
like a pine cone! The part I liked is when Data gets to show insight into the relationship (which could be of any kind) –e.g. “Is that the purpose of existence,
to care for someone?.…Through joining, they have
been healed. Grief has been transmuted to joy, loneliness to… belonging.”

That’s another thing that would’ve made this episode more interesting, if it really felt like Data was discovering an emotional truth. To me Data’s insight at the end was more of an explanatory tag to wind down the episode, rather than a revelation. That’s kind of the story of this episode though, some potent ideas and themes that aren’t fully realized or executed in a compelling way.
