[TOS] The Menagerie, Part 2

[TOS] Season 1, Episode 12 (Netflix: S1 E13): The Menagerie, Part 2

Rating: 2

The lead up is more interesting than the resolution, which is frequently the case in Star Trek. This episode was a little unsatisfying.

Notes:

“Number One” should have been a character throughout the series

Why is this girl so weird?

Whoever was in charge of painting that tree purple did a lousy job

And then this guy came!

Pike is getting bored with this episode

Cool googles

Now the girl is an Orion

A Cave!

File under: Cave!

Wasn’t this guy a villain for the ninja turtles?

I think they over did the hunch

I liked the original episode better. No Kirk, No trial. Thought they should have left it as a stand alone pilot. This was the writers getting lazy very early on. I think if they had known how expansive the star trek universe would become, they would have left this plot alone.

I also think that this episode was made when they had not really found their identity, so it is hard to criticize it to harshly. It basically plays out like a twilight zone in space. I feel like this becomes a theme for the first season as they constantly go back to ridiculous “what if’s” … IN SPACE!

And finally, the critique on the purple tree. While TV had been broadcasting in color for almost a decade, color TVs were not a majority in US households for another few years. making sure the sets were painted the right color probably wasn’t even a job yet. the DP most likely saw the tree, and said, thats a nice grey, and they kept shooting.

Surprised their were no comments on the brain peoples costumes or makeups.

Yeah I like The Cage (the pilot) too. I don’t know if the writers were getting lazy though. The Cage didn’t actually air on the first run so I think they liked the episode and wanted to try to figure out a way to show the story and having it make sense with the normal cast. Ok maybe they were a little lazy. I don’t know if you’ve seen any of the 2nd or 3rd season, but it’s funny you mention the ridiculous episodes in the 1st season. A lot of people think the 1st season is a little more serious than the 2nd and especially the 3rd, so brace yourself.

I think some of the sillier points from season 2 and 3 are episodes like “I, Mudd”, and “Spock’s Brain”. You should check em out
